১৪। Reportedly-বিবরণ থেকে থেকে জানা গেছে;

১৫। the 22-year-old girl from  Maheshkhali upazila-মহেশখালী উপজেলার এক কিশোরী (২২);

১৬। was in a relationship with a constable of the  station-থানার এক কনস্টেবল এর সাথে (প্রেমের) সম্পর্ক ছিল;

১৭। when she asked him to marry her-সে যখন তাকে বিয়ে করার কথা বলে;

১৮। he left her-সে তাকে(মেয়েটিকে) ছেড়ে দেয়/পরিত্যাগ করে;

১৯। As the girl  went to the police station-কিশোরী যখন থানায় যায়;

২০। to lodge a complaint-একটি অভিযোগ দায়ের করতে/করার জন্য;

২১। against the constable-কনস্টেবল এর বিরুদ্ধে;

২২। the OC, instead of recording the complaint-অভিযোগ রেকর্ড করার পরিবর্তে, ওসি;

২৩। assaulted her physically-তাকে(মেয়েটিকে) শারীরিকভাবে নির্যাতন করে/আঘাত করে/হামলা করে (করেছিল);

২৪। And not just the OC-এবং শুধু ওসি নয়;

২৫।  several other cops who were present there also-সেখানে উপস্থিত আরো কয়েকজন পুলিশ সদস্যও;

২৬। beat  her up-তাকে প্রহার করে;

২৭। leaving her injured-তাকে আহত করে ফেলে রাখে;

২৮। She was released from the police station-সে থানা থেকে মুক্তি পায়(পেয়েছিল);

২৯।  the following da-পরের দিন;

৩০। Torture in police custody has been happening-পুলিশ হেফাজতে নির্যাতন ঘটছে;

৩১। regularly-নিয়মিতভাবে;

৩২। in our  country-আমাদের দেশে;

৩৩। But the guilty police personnel-তবে দোষী পুলিশ সদস্য;

৩৪। have hardly been punished-খুব কমই শাস্তি পেয়েছে;

৩৫। according to the law-আইনানুযায়ী;

৩৬। Although our government-যদিও আমাদের সরকার;

৩৭। enacted the Torture and  Custodial Death (Prevention) Act in 2013-২০১৩ সালে নির্যাতন ও হেফাজতে মৃত্যু (নিবারণ) আইন পাশ করে;

৩৮। unfortunately-দু:খজনকভাবে; দুর্ভাগ্যবশত;

৩৯। the police has  been demanding to amend the law-পুলিশ আইনটি সংশোধনের দাবি জানাচ্ছে;

৪০। for long-দীর্ঘদিন ধরে;

৪১। While in most cases-যখন অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে;

৪২। the victims do not have-ভুক্তভোগীর থাকেনা;

৪৩।  the courage and  connection-মনোবল/সাহস এবং যোগসূত্র;

৪৪। to file cases -মামলা দায়ের করার;

৪৫। against the law enforcers-আইন শৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর সদস্যদের বিরুদ্ধে;

৪৬। in question-বিবেচনা/আলোচনা করিয়া;

৪৭। in this  case-এই মামলায়/ঘটনায়;

৪৮। the girl who was tortured-নির্যাতিত কিশোরী;

৪৯। has filed a case-মামলা করেছে; মামলা দায়ের করেছে;

৫০। with Cox's Bazar Women  and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 -কক্সবাজার নারী ও শিশু নির্যাতন দমন ট্রাইব্যুনাল-৩ এ;

৫১। against the four police  personnel-৪ পুলিশ সদস্যের বিরুদ্ধে;

৫২। including the OC of the Ukhiya Police Station-উখিয়া থানার ওসি সহ;

৫৩। which is a  very positive development-যা অত্যন্ত ইতিবাচক অগ্রগতি/উন্নয়ন;

৫৪। The court also took the case into cognisance-আদালত মামলাটি আমলেও নিয়েছেন;

৫৫। and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation in the district-এবং জেলার পিবিআইকে নির্দেশ দিয়েছেন;

৫৬। to  investigate the case-ঘটনাটির/মামলাটির তদন্ত করতে;

৫৭। and submit a report to it-এবং আদালতে একটি রিপোর্ট/প্রতিবেদন দাখিল করতে;

৫৮। We now demand-আমরা এখন দাবি করছি; এখন আমাদের দাবি হলো;

৫৯। an impartial investigation into the case-মামলাটির নিরপেক্ষ/পক্ষপাতহীন তদন্ত;

৬০। and hope that -এবং আশা করি যে;

৬১। the guilty police personnel -দোষী পুলিশ সদস্য;

৬১। will face justice -বিচারের মুখোমুখি হবে;

৬২। for the crime they have  committed-তারা যে অপরাধ (সংঘটন) করেছে তার জন্য;

Cops who assaulted a female student in Ukhiya must face justice

According to a report in The Daily Star on August 27, a  female college student was tortured inside Ukhiya police station by the  OC and some other cops. Reportedly, the 22-year-old girl from  Maheshkhali upazila was in a relationship with a constable of the  station and when she asked him to marry her, he left her. As the girl  went to the police station to lodge a complaint against the constable,  the OC, instead of recording the complaint, assaulted her physically.  And not just the OC, several other cops who were present there also beat  her up, leaving her injured. She was released from the police station  the following day.

Torture in police custody has been happening regularly in our  country. But the guilty police personnel have hardly been punished  according to the law. Although our government enacted the Torture and  Custodial Death (Prevention) Act in 2013, unfortunately, the police has  been demanding to amend the law for long.

While in most cases the victims do not have the courage and  connection to file cases against the law enforcers in question, in this  case, the girl who was tortured has filed a case with Cox's Bazar Women  and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 against the four police  personnel, including the OC of the Ukhiya Police Station, which is a  very positive development. The court also took the case into cognisance  and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation in the district to  investigate the case and submit a report to it.

We now demand an impartial investigation into the case and hope that  the guilty police personnel will face justice for the crime they have  committed.
