Usage of Just Now, Right Now, At this moment

সঠিক ব্যাখ্যা ও ব্যবহার জানুনঃ

#২৪তম বিসিএস পরীক্ষায় just now ফ্রেইজটির ব্যবহার থেকে প্রশ্ন এসেছে। কিন্তু, এটার ব্যবহার না-জানার কারণে অনেকেই বাংলাদেশি ব্যাকরণ বইয়ের কাল্পনিক নিয়ম মুখস্থ করে বিভ্রান্ত হচ্ছেন। এমনকি জবগাইডগুলিতেও কাল্পনিক গ্রামারের নিয়ম দেয়া আছে। তাহলে চলুন আমরা আজ ব্যাকরণের কাল্পনিক নিয়ম বাদ দিয়ে practical usage শিখে নিই monolingual dictionary এবং মাইকেল সোয়ানের Practical English Usage বই থেকে।

Oxford/Cambridge/Longman ইত্যাদি ডিকশনারি অনুযায়ী:

Just now এর দুইটা অর্থ হয়:

1. A moment ago (কিছুক্ষন আগে --> a short time ago)

Example: I saw him just now. (I saw him a moment ago.)

অর্থাৎ, 'just now' দ্বারা 'কিছুক্ষন আগে' বোঝালে past tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।

2. At this moment (এই মুহূর্তে --> right now)

Example: We are having dinner just now. (We are having dinner at this moment.)

অর্থাৎ, 'just now' দ্বারা 'এই মুহূর্তে' বোঝালে present simple/continuous tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।

অথচ, আমরা মনে করি যে, বাক্যে just now থাকলে সর্বদা present perfect tense ব্যবহার করতে হয়। কিন্তু, এই নিয়মটি Made in Bangladesh :)

Practical English Usage (4th edition, page '504')

'Just now' can mean either 'at this moment’ or ‘a few moments ago’. 

Example:

She is not in just now. Can I take a message? [at this moment]

I saw Jake just now. He wanted to talk to you. [a few moments ago]

When 'just now' means 'a few moments ago', two positions are possible:

a) in end-position, usually with a past tense.

- I telephoned Ann just now. (বাক্যের শেষে হলে past tense)

b) in mid-position with the verb, with a present perfect or past tense. ('just now' verb এর পূর্বে বসলে past এবং present perfect উভয়ই ব্যবহার করা যায়)

- I ('ve) just now realised what I need to do. [অর্থাৎ, present perfect tense ব্যবহার করতে হলে just now অবশ্যই verb এর পূর্বে রাখতে হবে; তবে এক্ষেত্রেও, past tense এর ব্যবহারটাই বেশি প্রচলিত; এ কারণেই 

কোনো ডিকশনারিতেই present perfect tense -এর ব্যবহার দেখানো হয়নি।]

এবার আমরা বিসিএসের প্রশ্নটি দেখি:

এখানে, just now ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে at this moment/right now অর্থে। অর্থাৎ, এই মুহূর্তে তিনি খাবার খাচ্ছেন, কিন্তু, তিনি বলেছেন যে, খাবার শেষে আপনার সাথে দেখা করবেন। তাই, এখানে present continous tense হয়েছে; present perfect করতে হলে অবশ্যই verb এর পূর্বে just now ব্যবহার করতে হবে --> He has just now had his dinner... অতএব, এখানে একমাত্র সঠিক উত্তর হলো is having. --> He is having dinner at this moment.

ছোটো বাচ্চাদের এতো কিছু শেখার প্রয়োজন পড়ে না। ছড়া থেকেই শিখে যায় যে, বাক্যে just now দ্বারা 'কিছুক্ষন আগে' বা 'a few moments ago' বোঝালে past simple tense ব্যবহার করাটাই ন্যাচারাল ইংরেজি। ফলে, তারা দ্রুত ভাষা শিখতে পারে। আর, বড়রা হাবুডুবু খায় গ্রামারের সমুদ্রে।
