THE UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM IN BANGLADESH

Unemployment is a situation where a young, energetic man capable of doing any work does not get any job to do. Infact, when a man is jobless we call him unemployed. Thus when a man is out of any productive work is said to be in a state of unemployment. Although unemployment is a problem in many countries of the world, it is extremely severe in Bangladesh.

It is so acute in Bangladesh because of over growing population, lack of proper industrialization, lack of technical and vocational education and false sense of dignity and prestige for being officers. Moreover, cottage industry is in decaying position for which many people are going out of employment. With the growth of population, the limited land is losing its capacity to provide employment facilities in the farms to the over growing rural population. These people are migrating to the cities for seeking job opportunities.

Many educated people, both in urban area or rural area, lacking in technical or professional skill are suffering from frustration for want of jobs. These people have vague idea about manual works. They consider manual works beneath dignity. They think that being officers and working in the offices is more dignified and prestigious than doing any productive work. So they remain unemployed. Bangladesh is industrially very backward. We have few mills and factories. But these mills and factories are frequently closed due to lack of proper management and labour unrest.

These very few mills and factories fail to provide adequate employment facilities. Besides, uneven distribution of wealth contributes to unemployment problem.

We all should devise plans and find out ways to solve the problem. But such a problem cannot be solved overnight. A long term programme should be taken by the government. The speedy industrialization should be initiated so that more and more jobs are created.

The cottage industries should be revived without further delay so that artisans and craftsmen in the rural areas will not switch over their professions. In educational institutions, vocational education and training should be introduced so that the students can get self employed after their academic career and engage themselves in productive work. Above all, the young and educated people should give up their false sense of dignity for becoming officers and engage themselves in whatever works are available.

Last of all, steps should be taken to increase our national income. All attempts will be fruitless if we cannot control the over growth of our population. So, government should proceed very carefully with proper and acurate planning to solve this difficult problem.
