Christopher Marlowe

Christopher Marlowe (1564 – 93) হচ্ছেন শেক্সপিয়ারের সমসাময়িক একজন নাট্যকার। ক্রিস্টোফার মারলো বয়সে শেক্সপিয়ারের চেয়ে মাত্র ২ মাসের বড়। দুজনের ঐতিহাসিক ছবি গুলো দেখলে মনে হবে দুজন একই ব্যাক্তি। কারণ তাঁদের চেহারা প্রায় সেইম, সহোদর ভাইয়ের মত।

*** Doctor Faustus নাটকের বিখ্যাত দুটি চরিত্র হচ্ছে Dr. Faustus আর Mephistopheles ( মেফিস্টোফিলিস).

Alexandar Pope:

*তরুণ বয়সে পোপ কঠিন ব্যাধিতে অাক্রান্ত জয়েছিলেন। ফলে তাঁর শরীর একেবারে ভেঙ্গে পড়েছিল। ক্লান্তিহীন অনর্গল রচনা করা বিধ্বস্ত, অপমানিত, লাঞ্ছিত, সমাজচ্যুত পোপের অন্তরে জমেছিল সমাজের প্রতি ঘৃণা এবং এ ঘৃণাই তাঁর কাব্যের জগতে প্রভাব ফেলেছিল।

কবিতাঃ

– The rape of the lock (বেলিন্দার রূপের ছটায় সূর্যের অালো ম্লাণ হয়ে যায়। যুবকেরা তাঁর চারপাশে ভীড় করে একটু ভালবাসার প্রত্যাশায়। তবে সে পাত্তা দেয় না। বায়বীয় প্রেতাত্মাদের সর্দার এরিয়েলের নেতৃত্বে বেলিন্দার রূপ-যৌবন রক্ষার দায়িত্ব নেয়।

– বেরন নামক এক যুবক বেলিন্দার রূপে মোহিত। সে বেলিন্দার চুলের একটি বেণী কেটে নেয়।

– বেলিন্দা হা-হুতাশ করলে এরিয়েল তাকে জানায় তাঁর বেণী স্থান পেয়েছে নক্ষত্রলোকে।

– Robinson Crusoe (1719) উপন্যাসের নায়ক রবিনসন ক্রুশো, যে পরিত্যক্ত নির্জন দ্বীপে 26 বছরের জন্য দুঃসহ জীবন-যাপন করেছিলেন। পরবর্তীতে তিনি সে দ্বীপের একচ্ছত্র অধিপতি হয়েছিলেন। সে দ্বীপের ভৃত্য Friday এবং Xury কে তিনি তাঁর ভৃত্যে পরিণত করেছিলেন। তিনি দাস ব্যবসায় লাভবান হন।

{{{ Kubla Khan হচ্ছে একটি অস্পম্পূর্ণ কবিতা। Coleridge ছিল আফিম Addicted। তো একদিন আফিম খাওয়ার পর Kubla Khan কবিতাটি তাঁর মাথায় আসে এবং নেশাগ্রস্ত অবস্থায় তিনি তা লিখতে বসেন। কিছুক্ষণ পরেই ডাক পিয়ন আসে দরজায় কড়া নাড়ে তাঁকে চিঠি দিতে। চিঠি আনতে আনতে তাঁর নেশা কেটে যায়। এরপর সাথে সাথেই আবার কবিতার বাকি অংশ লিখতে বসলেও দুর্ভাগ্যবশত আর একটি লাইনও তিনি মনে করতে পারেন নি। পরে তিনি বলেন যেটুকু লিখেছে তা ছিল ১০ ভাগের ১ ভাগ। আর এই Kubla Khan হচ্ছে Coleridge এর সবচেয়ে কঠিন কবিতা।

• মাত্র ২৬ বছর বেঁচে ছিলেন। এর ভিতরেই তাঁর কবি প্রতিভার ঝলক দেখিয়েছেন।
