Television is one of the greatest wonders of modern science. In radio we only hear but in television we can both hear and see. In modern age television plays a very important role in man's day to day life. The word television has come from the two Latin words-'tele' and 'visio. Tele' means distance and 'visio' means to see. So the literal meaning of the word television is seeing from distance. The German scientist Mr. Paul Nepkow first thought about television. In 1925 the English scientist Bayard invented television. Gradually in 1945 television took its present shape.
The mechanical device of a television can be compared with an eye. Instead of an animal eye it is an electrical eye and instead of human brain there remains a receiver. In television, transmission of sound is done as it is done in Radio. Transmission of picture has been possible because of the improvement of photography. At first the picture is scanned to break it up into small elements of light and shade which are transformed into electric current by a tube called-cathode Ray Tube. These light waves are received by receiver set from which, through a mechanical process. We get the image of the original picture.
Television is the most modern means of communication. It is now the most popular mass media. Sitting in front of a television set, we get the news and views of all the corner of the world. Television is wonderful in the field of relax and recreation. After a day's work we sit in front of a television set and remove all of our tiredness. In developed countries television is widely used in the field of education. In our country also television is being used in multi purpose activities. Open University imparts their education (f) through television and radio. The popularity of television is immensely high for various reasons. A businessman can get information of the market, a sports lover can watch his favourite matches, a debate lovers can enjoy debates. In a word, any kind of class can get interest in television. Television is the lecture ground of the world leaders. It has, as it were, brought the whole world in our drawing room. Actually there is no demerit of television. But sometimes students become addicted to television and neglect their study because Dish Antenna television programmes go on round the clock. In many of the channels obscene scenes are shown and these have much bad effect on our social life. In modern age it is universally recognized that television is a very good medium for spreading education, culture etc. In Bangladesh television is still a thing of the rich people. Govt. should try to take steps so that poor people can buy a television set.
